Musical Montage: Goldfinger “More Today Than Yesterday”
The Waterboy turns 25 today, originally released in theaters on November 6th, 1998. Along with a soundtrack full of classic rock from the likes of Rush, The Allman Brothers, and Credence Clearwater Revival, the punk rock band Goldfinger performed a cover of the song “More Today Than Yesterday”, which played over the movie’s credits. Originally performed by The Spiral Staircase in 1969, the original song was a charting hit, reaching #12 on the Billboard charts and seeing many covers over the years. Goldfinger were no strangers to performing cover versions, with one of their biggest being a cover of “99 Red Balloons” which appeared in several movies and the game Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec. They also had songs like “Superman” that appeared in Meet the Deedles the same year as The Waterboy and they became a staple of the Tony Hawk series. To promote the song and the movie, a music video for “More Today Than Yesterday” was shot, which features the guys from Goldfinger taking a ride on the Goodyear blimp while clips from the movie appear on the blimp’s center console, with most of the clips featuring the scenes between Adam Sandler and Fairuza Balk.
