Musical Montage: Bing Crosby “White Christmas”

Holding the record for the best-selling single of all time (for physical media), Bing Crosby’s version of “White Christmas” is one of the most beloved Christmas songs of all time and was featured in two of Crosby’s most famous movies.  Written by Irving Berlin, the song was originally featured in the movie Holiday Inn, in which Crosby sings as a duet with actress Marjorie Reynolds (with dubbed vocals from Martha Mears).  “White Christmas” won Best Original Song at the 1943 Oscars and it was at the top of the Billboard charts for 11 weeks in 1942.  The massive success of the song led to the movie White Christmas in 1954, which featured a new version from Crosby for the movie’s soundtrack.  Strangely enough, the version that is most played around this time of year is from 1947, which is a re-recording of the song from Crosby.  The song has sold an estimated 50 million copies and has become a staple of Christmas and holiday playlists in the decades since it was first released.  You can check out a video version of the song released on the official Bing Crosby YouTube channel from 2019 below.
