Musical Montage: Skee-Lo “Top of the Stairs”
Best known for his hit song “I Wish”, 90s MC Skee-Lo also contributed “Top of the Stairs” to the 1995 movie Money Train, which played over the end credits. Money Train starred Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, and Jennifer Lopez, with Harrelson and Snipes as adoptive brothers and police officers who clash over a scheme to rob the titular “money train”, a subway train that transports the revenue of the subway system. The movie wasn’t a big hit and didn’t fare well with critics either and Skee-Lo’s song didn’t do much on the charts either, only reaching #78 on the Billboard R&B charts. Skee-Lo got into a legal battle with his record label shortly after the release of his album I Wish, which included both “I Wish” and “Top of the Stairs”, with Skee-Lo claiming that the record label took all the credit and he didn’t make a single cent from its success. He eventually won the rights in court and released his second album in 2001 and another in 2012 under his indie label. To promote the album and the movie, a music video for “Top of the Stairs” was shot, which featured clips from the movie along with Skee-Lo donning some goofy 70s clothing for a few scenes.
