Musical Montage: Lisa Loeb “Stay (I Missed You)”
Ben Stiller’s directorial debut (which he also co-starred in), Reality Bites, turned 30 this past weekend and the movie’s soundtrack is where Lisa Loeb made her debut with “Stay (I Missed You)”. Originally written in 1990, the song was potentially going to be sold to Daryl Hall for a music project but Loeb decided to use the song herself. Her next-door neighbor in New York City just happened to be Reality Bites co-star Ethan Hawke, who took a copy of the song to Stiller and got it onto the movie’s soundtrack. The song was the lead single off the Reality Bites soundtrack album and eventually reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1994. This makes Loeb the first artist to top the chart in the US without being signed to a record label. Hawke produced and directed the music video for Loeb, which Spin Magazine called the best music video of 1994. You can check it out below.
