Battle at the Box Office 6/17/24
After months of seemingly endless disappointments at the box office, Inside Out 2 exploded this past weekend with the biggest opening of the year and the biggest opening since Barbie last summer.
Inside Out 2 took in a massive $154.2 million for its opening weekend, the 2nd biggest animated opening ever. It’s around $9 million more than the opening of last year’s biggest animated hit, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. For Pixar, it’s the studio’s 2nd biggest opening ever, behind Incredibles 2, which is also the biggest opening animated film ever with $182.7 million. Worldwide, Inside Out 2 has made $296.5 million, and it seems like it could be on track for somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 million in total domestically and potentially close to $1 billion worldwide.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die had an incredibly solid 40% drop from last week’s opening, probably because it was targeting the exact opposite office that Inside Out 2 was. The movie made another $33.7 million, bringing it to $113 million domestically and $215.2 million worldwide. It’s closing the gap on Bad Boys for Life daily and over the weekends, and if it surpasses its predecessor, it will be looking at over $200 million domestically.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes actually saw an increase in business this past weekend, up 5% from last weekend with $5.5 million, taking it to $158.1 million domestically. Worldwide, the movie has $374.8 million.
The Garfield Movie and IF rounded out the top 5, both slipping thanks to the massive competition from Inside Out 2. Garfield has $78.2 million domestically, and IF has $101 million domestically.
The per-theater average went to Inside Out 2, which earned $34,730 in each of the 4,440 theaters it played over the weekend.
