Battle at the Box Office 9/9/24
Audiences were clamoring for the Ghost with the Most this weekend as Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice dominated the box office with the second-best September opening in history.
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice opened to a massive $111 million, leaving everything else in theaters this past weekend in the dust. That amounts to the second-best September opening in box office history, behind only 2017’s IT. It’s Tim Burton’s second biggest weekend, behind Alice in Wonderland, boosted by the post-Avatar honeymoon period of 3D in theaters. For comparison, adjusted for inflation, the original Beetlejuice opened to $21 million back in 1988, although it only opened in 1,000 theaters compared to Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice opening in over 4,000 theaters this past weekend.
Deadpool & Wolverine finally relented the top spot at the box office, dropping 55% from last weekend and taking second with $7 million. The movie now has $613.8 million domestically and $1.287 billion worldwide. It’s currently the 22nd biggest movie of all time worldwide, between Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Frozen.
Reagan moved to third place this past weekend, counterprogramming for an older demographic and making $4.8 million. It opened over Labor Day weekend last week and its domestic total is at $18.1 million.
Alien: Romulus and It Ends With Us round out the top five. Alien is now slightly over $97 million domestically and $314.1 million worldwide, while It Ends With Us has $141.3 million domestically and $309.3 million worldwide.
The Front Room barely made it into the top 10 for the weekend. It opened in just over 2,000 theaters but only made $1.6 million. The CinemaScore was a C-, so it will likely crash and burn out of the top 10 by next weekend. It’s the second-worst wide opening weekend for A24, just topping Zola from 2021.
