Everything Action Theater: Dances with Wolves (1990)

Kevin Costner returns to epic theatrical westerns this weekend with Horizon: An American Saga, and back in 1990, he starred and directed the Best Picture-winning Dances with Wolves, which you can watch in the latest Everything Action Theater.  Based on the 1988 novel by Michael Blake, Costner starred as Lieutenant John J. Dunbar of the Union Army.  After an act of bravery in battle against the Confederacy, Dunbar is given his choice of postings and takes the most western-located post he can get to see the frontier before it is gone.  He arrives in Fort Sedgwick in Colorado, which has been abandoned.  Dunbar decides to try to rebuild the fort and encounters the native tribes in the area, befriending the Sioux and learning their ways.  The movie was a massive hit in 1990 and also earned critical acclaim.  Along with the Best Picture win, Dances with Wolves also won Best Directing, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Mixing.  It’s still used as a comparison for movies with a similar premise, like Avatar. Thanks to YouTube, you can watch all three hours of Dances With Wolves below.
