Here’s all the movie and TV news you need to know from the past week; it’s the News Shotgun.
Suits L.A picked up to series: The Suits spin-off Suits L.A. has been picked up to series for NBC. Stephen Amell stars as Ted Black, “a former federal prosecutor from New York, has reinvented himself representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles. His firm is at a crisis point and to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career.” Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, Bryan Greenberg, co-star, and Suits creator Aaron Korsh is back to executive production and writing.
Halo canceled at Paramount+: Halo, one of the highest-profile Paramount+ shows, has been canceled after two seasons. The second season ended in March of this year and ended on a cliffhanger, with Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber) arriving on the titular Halo and The Flood starting to be unleashed. There wasn’t a specific reason for the cancellation, but Xbox, 343 Industries, and Amblin Entertainment will try to shop the show on another network or streaming platform.
RIP Bob Newhart, Shannon Doherty, and Richard Simmons: A trio of celebrities passed away this past week. Bob Newhart died at age 94 after a series of short illnesses. He was beloved for his deadpan comedic style, and he starred on The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart and became known to another generation with appearances in Elf and The Big Bang Theory. Shannon Doherty died at age 53 after a long battle with cancer. She was best known for starring in Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed and also appeared in movies like Heathers and Mallrats. Richard Simmons died at age 76. Famous for his high-energy but accessible fitness videos, he starred in The Richard Simmons Show talk show from 1984 to 1989. In recent years, he had become highly reclusive and has rarely left his Los Angeles home.
Dan Stevens starring in Season 3 of The Terror: Dan Stevens will star in the third season of AMC’s anthology horror series, The Terror. Season 3 is subtitled “Devil in Silver” and is based on the Victor LaValle novel The Devil in Silver. Stevens stars as Pepper, “a working-class moving man who, through a combination of bad luck and a bad temper, finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital – an institution filled with the people society would rather forget. There, he must contend with patients who work against him, doctors who harbor grim secrets, and perhaps even the very Devil himself. As Pepper navigates a hellscape where nothing is as it seems, he finds that the only path to freedom is to face down the entity which thrives on the suffering within New Hyde’s walls – but doing so may prove that the worst demons of all live inside him.” The show will have six episodes and air in 2025 on AMC and AMC+.
24 movie in development: A film version of 24 is in early development at 20th Century Studios. Brian Grazer, who produced the original series, teased the film in a recent interview. There is no word if Kiefer Sutherland will return as the iconic Jack Bauer or if the movie will follow a different character a la 24: Legacy.
Reginald the Vampire canceled at SyFy: SyFy’s horror-comedy series Reginald the Vampire has been canceled at SyFy after two seasons. Jacob Batalon starred Reginald Andres, who becomes a vampire and has to learn to navigate his new world full of vain, fit vampires, bully managers at work, and a vampire chieftain who wants to kill him. There’s no word if the showrunners will try and shop it at another outlet.
