Musical Montage: Aqua “Turn Back Time”
Best known for “Barbie Girl,” Aqua had a few other hits on their resume, including “Turn Back Time,” featured on the soundtrack for 1998’s Sliding Doors. The movie starred Gwyneth Paltrow, John Hannah, John Lynch, and Jeanne Tripplehorn. It was a multiverse/parallel universe romantic drama that follows two storylines spun off from a single event: whether Paltrow’s Helen can board a train on the London Underground in time or not. The film did OK in the US but was a hit in the UK and was the highest-grossing UK production of the year. “Turn Back Time” was released as a single off the movie’s soundtrack, and the seventh single was released by Aqua. Like the movie, it was also a hit in the UK, going to #1 on the UK charts. It reached #18 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart. Critics praised the song for showing off more of Aqua’s actual musical talents and relying less on gimmicks like “Barbie Girl” had. The music video featured scenes from the movie and was also shot in the London Underground, which played a pivotal role in the film. You can check it out below.
