Battle at the Box Office 10/21/24

Horror continued to reign at the box office as Smile 2 took the top spot over the past weekend.

Smile 2 opened to $23 million, just slightly above what the first movie did in 2022. It eventually made $106 million domestically and $217 million worldwide. We’ll have to wait until this coming weekend to see how Smile 2 holds up and how it will compare to the first movie, but it’s off to a solid start. The movie got a B CinemaScore, which is a solid rating for a horror movie and should mean it will have a decent word of mouth.

The Wild Robot stayed in second place with another $10 million, bringing its gross to $101.7 million domestically and $196 million worldwide. As far as DreamWorks’ worldwide grosses are concerned, it’s currently between Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Wererabbit and Abominable.

Terrifier 3 slipped to third place but still had a fairly solid hold, with a 51% drop from last weekend’s #1 opening. Considering how quickly horror movies can drop and the extreme nature of the movie, this seems like proof of how strong the franchise has become, and it will probably remain strong as we head into Halloween next week. It currently has $36.2 million domestically and $39.4 million worldwide.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, and We Live in Time rounded out the top five. The latter expanded wide to 985 theaters and took in $4.1 million domestically, bringing its total to $4.5 million.

Joker: Folie á Deux didn’t entirely collapse out of the top 10, dropping to sixth place with $2.1 million.  The movie has $56.4 million domestically and $191.9 million worldwide.  Most analysts believe it needs around $450 million worldwide just to break even, which it won’t even come close to reaching.

Saturday Night continued to be soft at the box office, almost out of the top 10 after a second weekend in wide release.  It slipped to ninth place and made $1.7 million, bringing it to $7.5 million domestically.

The Per Theater average went to Neon’s Anora, a buzzy awards contender that took in a huge $91,751 in each of the 6 theaters it played in over the weekend.
