Everything Action Theater: The Grudge (2004)
Celebrating its 20th anniversary recently, you can watch 2004’s The Grudge in the latest Everything Action Theater.
During a wave of American remakes of Japanese horror movies, like The Ring, Pulse, Dark Water, and One Missed Call, The Grudge was a remake of 2002’s Ju-On: The Grudge, directed by Takashi Shimizu. In a rare case, Shimizu directed the remake of his original movie, with Sarah Michelle Gellar starring as Karen, an American nurse living in Japan. Taking a job as a caregiver for an elderly American woman with dementia, Karen gets drawn into the dark forces haunting the family’s home, most notably the vengeful and deadly spirit of Japanese housewife Kayako Saeki (Takako Fuji). Fuji reprised her role from the previous Japanese Ju-On movies. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the movie was a huge hit, making over $187 million worldwide, which led to three sequels, the most recent being in 2019.
