Everything Action Theater: Galaxy Quest (1999)

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this week, Galaxy Quest both parodied and paid loving homage to sci-fi television, most notably Star Trek. You can watch it in the latest Everything Action Theater.

Tim Allen stars as Jason Nesmith, the star of the 1980s TV series Galaxy Quest. He and the rest of the show’s cast, who are played by Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub, and Daryl Mitchell, are making ends meet with appearances at sci-fi conventions, but they find themselves going from a TV show to reality when they are beamed into outer space by a race of aliens known as the Thermians, who believe the TV show Galaxy Quest was a historical record and that Jason and the cast are actual intergalactic heroes.  Extremely reluctant at first, the TV show cast eventually rises to the occasion and faces off against the ruthless alien warlord Sariss (Robin Sachs), who wants a mysterious device called Omega 13 that is in possession of the Thermians.  The movie features a great blend of satire and genuine affection for the movie’s inspiration, along with fun sci-fi action and incredible special effects and make-up.  The movie did decently well in theaters but has since become a beloved cult classic, especially among Star Trek and sci-fi fans.  Fans even rated it the 7th best Star Trek movie on IGN.  There have been reports of a sequel or TV show continuation over the years. Still, none of those projects seemed to gain any momentum, and Alan Rickman’s death was a significant blow to any future adventures for the crew of the NSEA Protector.  You can watch the movie below via YouTube.
