Musical Montage: Spice Girls “Too Much”
To promote their movie Spice World, the Spice Girls released the single “Too Much,” the follow-up to “Spice Up Your Life” from the Spiceworld. Spiceworld was not the official movie soundtrack but essentially acted as it, with almost every song except “Move Over” appearing in the film. The Spice Girls had to record the album while shooting Spice World so that they would both come out at their scheduled times, which meant between takes or after shooting, the Girls would go to a mobile recording studio to record tracks for the album. “Too Much” debuted at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also got a UPN special hosted by Brandy, who interviewed the Spice Girls, and it also featured behind-the-scenes footage and the premiere of the “Too Much” music video. Leaning into the movie theme, the “Too Much” video features each Spice Girl in a movie-inspired set piece, like a post-apocalyptic action movie or black and white musical.
