Battle at the Box Office 1/6/25

Over the first weekend of 2025, Mufasa: The Lion King managed to edge out its holiday rival, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, to take the top spot at the box office.

Mufasa: The Lion King took in another $23.4 million, taking it to $168.2 million domestically and $476 million worldwide.  It dropped 36% from the previous weekend and is currently the 13th highest-grossing film worldwide for 2024.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 made another $21.3 million and now has $187.6 million domestically and $336.4 million worldwide.  Domestically, Sonic is still pacing ahead of Mufasa, despite Mufasa’s win this past weekend, and it doesn’t appear like there is any closing of the gap for Mufasa.

Nosferatu remained in third place despite a 40% drop from last weekend’s opening, making another $13 million domestically. Worldwide, it has just over $100 million, making it Robert Eggers’s highest-grossing film of all time.

Moana 2 and Wicked swapped places for fourth and fifth place, respectively.  Moana 2 made another $12.4 million domestically, while Wicked took in $9.9 million.  Wicked had special “sing-along” showings recently, but it also arrived on digital to rent as a PVOD or buy, so that may have eaten into repeat audiences or any stragglers who were thinking of seeing it but decided to buy it for home instead.  Worldwide, Moana 2 is closing in on $1 billion with $960 million, and Wicked is getting close to $700 million with $680 million.

The rest of the top 10 remained in the exact same spots they were in last weekend, and all of them had around 30-40% dropoffs from last weekend.

The Brutalist once again had the best Per Theater average, with $30,453 in each of the eight theaters it played in over the weekend.
