Musical Montage: Go West “King of Wishful Thinking”
Celebrating its 35th anniversary this past weekend, 1990’s Pretty Woman kicked off with Go West’s “King of Wishful Thinking”, which played during the movie’s opening credits. Go West was formed in 1982 and features the duo of Peter Cox and Richard Drummie. The duo had released two albums before the release of Pretty Woman and “King of Wishful Thinking,” but that song became their biggest hit by far, hitting #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is the song they are best known for and is widely considered one of the greatest songs of the 90s. It later appeared on their third album, Indian Summer, which was released in 1992. The music video became just as iconic as the song, even getting a shot-for-shot remake by Jimmy Fallon and Paul Rudd on The Tonight Show. While it does feature some visual nods to Pretty Woman, it mainly features Cox and Drummie on a white stage as various random characters and props come and go, including zebras, hockey players, and ballet dancers.
