Musical Montage: Beowulf “2 Cents”
Cult classic Tank Girl came out 30 years ago on March 31st, 1995. While it was a box office failure at the time, one thing that earned critical praise was the movie’s soundtrack Curated by Courtney Love, the soundtrack included her band Hole with the movie’s opening credits song “Drown Soda”, a new version of “Girl U Want” by Devo, who were huge fans of the original Tank Girl comic series and “Army of Me” by Bjork before it was released as a single. If the movie had succeeded, Bjork most likely would have had a Tank Girl-themed music video to go with the single, but because the film bombed, she and her record label backed away. One song that wasn’t included on the soundtrack album but actually had the most tie-in to the movie was “2 Cents” by Beowulf. Director Rachel Talalay tried to include the song on the soundtrack but couldn’t get the rights from the band’s label, Restless Records. Talalay instead directed the music video for “2 Cents”, which features the band performing on a tank and both animated and live-action footage from the movie featured throughout.
