Musical Montage: Jim Johnston “Know Your Role”
If you have a favorite piece of WWF/WWE entrance music, chances are good that it was created by Jim Johnston, who worked for the company from the 1980s to 2017. Johnston created music for a ton of big names, including The Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Vince McMahon himself, Kane, Brock Lesnar, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Ultimate Warrior, Iron Sheik, Bam Bam Bigelow and more. He also crafted the themes for various events and also worked on music for the video games and movies released under the WWE umbrella, including the “so bad it’s good” classic No Holds Barred. Since Hobbs & Shaw is finally out this coming Friday, we’re featuring one of Johnston’s contribution to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “Know Your Role”. The Rock had a few other pieces of entry music from Johnston before “Know Your Role” but that song was the one he used the longest, from September 1999 to April 2001 and then he would bring it back in 2004, 2007 and 2008, with other songs like “If You Smell…” and “Is Cookin” being used in between. Currently, whenever The Rock returns to the WWE, he uses the Johnston track “Electrifying” There’s also a version of “Know Your Role” that was performed by Method Man that The Rock used briefly in 2000 before using the Johnston version. Check out the Johnston and Method Man versions below.
