Everything Action Theater: Sonic X
With Sonic the Hedgehog 2 coming out this weekend, it seems like the perfect time to highlight another Sonic animated series for Everything Action Theater. Running from 2003 to 2006 in the US, Sonic X was created by the legendary Japanese animation studio TMS Entertainment, which worked on anime like Lupin the Third and Detective Conan while also working with Western studios on animation for classics like Batman: The Animated Series, Tiny Toons, Ducktales, Spider-Man, Animaniacs and more. TMS worked with Segan and Sonic Team on Sonic X and it was inspired by and had similar plots to the Sonic Adventure games. 4Kids brought the series to the US and heavily edited it for content but it was still here and in France, although it was not as popular in its native Japan. Similar to the plot of the new live-action movies, the show finds Sonic and his friends teleported to Earth along with Dr. Eggman and his henchmen after trying to stop Dr. Eggman’s latest scheme involving the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic befriends a boy named Chris Thorndyke, who helps Sonic and his friend get used to Earth and help them stop Eggman from taking over this new planet. The show ran for 78 episodes and had tie-in comics, an edutainment game on the Leapster system, and a trading card game. You can check out the first episode “Chaos Control Freaks” below thanks to the official TMS YouTube channel.
