Battle at the Box Office 3/10/25
After several delays, Mickey 17 debuted this past weekend and dethroned Captain America: Brave New World at the top of the box office, but it may ultimately be a pretty significant loss for Warner Bros. Discovery.
Mickey 17 opened with $19 million domestically and a total of $53.2 million worldwide. The movie had a reported budget of $118 million, so it needs to gross at least $240 million worldwide to be considered close to breaking even, which, given its start, seems like a long shot. For Robert Pattinson, the opening is slightly behind Tenet, which opened just barely removed from the 2020 COVID lockdowns and Water for Elephants. The Cinemascore was surprisingly a B, which seems like a very solid audience reaction to how weird this movie has been described. We’ll have to see if that translates to a decent hold this coming weekend.
Captain America: Brave New World dropped to second place with another $8.3 million, taking its total to just over $176 million domestically and $371.1 million worldwide. That worldwide total is barely past Captain America: The First Avenger and about $8 million behind Black Widow.
Last Breath dropped to third in its second weekend with $4 million, a 47% drop from last weekend’s opening. It now has $14.5 million domestically.
The Monkey and Paddington in Peru rounded out the top 5, with The Monkey closing in on $35 million domestically and Paddington close to $40 million.
Boosted by its many Oscar wins, including Best Picture, Anora returned to the top 10 in seventh place with $1.8 million. Adding to its previous grosses, it has earned $18.3 million domestically in 21 weeks of release.
Toward the bottom of the top 10, Rule Breakers and In The Lost Lands were in 9th and 10th place, with Rule Breakers making $1.5 million and In the Lost Lands making just over $1 million.
The best per-theater average went to sports comedy Eephus, which made $10,512 in both theaters it played.
