Musical Montage: Aaliyah “Are You That Somebody?”
Coming off the soundtrack for 1998’s Doctor Dolittle, “Are You That Somebody?” from Aaliyah is a pretty sultry R&B/Hip-Hop jam for a goofy Eddie Murphy movie. Written and produced by Timbaland and Static Major, “Are You That Somebody?” was included on the Doctor Dolittle soundtrack album, which was a huge success, peaking at #4 on the Billboard 200 album chart and going 2x Platinum. “Are You That Somebody?” was also a hit as a single, peaking at #21 and becoming the most played video at various times across BET, The Box, and MTV. The music video for the song was shot in the same cave as the Batcave in Batman ’66 and featured clips from Doctor Dolittle projected on the walls. The only physical nod to animals is Aaliyah holding a hawk on her arm, but otherwise, the video has a more secret agent/espionage theme than wacky comedy. The music video was praised for its choreography, especially the climactic, flamenco-style dance sequence. You can check out the video below.
