Battle at the Box Office 4/8/24
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire eclipsed all comers, including Monkey Man and The First Omen, to stay on top of the box office for a second weekend.
Godzilla x Kong took in another $31.2 million, bringing it to $134.5 million domestically and $361 million worldwide. It’s now the 5th highest-grossing film worldwide for 2024 and, domestically, it’s tracking well ahead of Kung Fu Panda 4, currently the 4th highest-grossing film of 2024. We’ll have to see how strong Godzilla x Kong stays to see how it climbs on the worldwide chart. Domestically, it’s the third highest-grossing movie of 2024 behind Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4.
Monkey Man took second place with a debut of $10.1 million, which seems to be right around most projections going into the weekend. As an actor, it’s the second best opening for Dev Patel behind Chappie. The movie got a B+ CinemaScore, which may not be great for its word of mouth going into its second weekend. Worldwide, the movie has $12.7 million.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire took 3rd place with another $9 million. It now has $88.8 million domestically and $138.1 million worldwide. It’s still tracking behind Ghostbusters: Afterlife weekend to weekend.
The First Omen opened in 4th place with $8.3 million. 20th Century Studios/Disney held off on critic reviews until after the movie opened in theaters, which usually means they just want to dump it and avoid early bad reviews. Critic reviews were actually pretty strong though, with a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score was not quite as high and it has C CinemaScore, which is fairly typical for horror movies. We’ll have to see if it suffers a steep drop-off this coming weekend.
Kung Fu Panda 4 rounded out the top 5 with $7.7 million. It now has $165.9 million domestically and $409.5 million worldwide.
Further down the list, the Fathom Event movie Somone Like You took 7th place with $2.9 in 1,800 theaters. In 1,002 theaters, Wicked Little Letter took 10th place with $1.3 million.
The Per Theater average went to Housekeeping for Beginners, which took in $11,806 in 4 theaters.
