Here’s all the movie and TV news you need to know from the past week; it’s the News Shotgun.
Krapopolis Renewed for a Fourth Season: Dan Harmon’s Fox animated series, Krapopolis, has been renewed for a fourth season. The show’s first season wrapped up in May and had already received a second and third-season renewal. The show also recently received an Emmy nomination for Hannah Waddingham for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance. The show stars Richard Ayoade as Tyrannis, the king of one of the first cities in civilization, Krapopolis, who is trying to introduce new ideas while dealing with invading armies, mythological creatures, and his wacky family.
The Boys spin-off Vought Rising announced: A new spin-off to The Boys universe was revealed during the show’s panel at SDCC with Vought Rising. The new show will star Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy and Aya Cash as Clara Vought, who will eventually become the superhero Stormfront, and is set in the 1950s in the early days of Soldier Boy’s career and Vought. Ackles was also announced to return as a series regular for The Boys’ fifth and final season.
Judy Greer and Mark Hamill join The Long Walk: Judy Greer and Mark Hamill have joined the upcoming Stephen King adaptation, The Long Walk, which Lionsgate is developing. Based on the novel he wrote under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman, the story follows a group of 50 teenage boys who are in a competition known as The Long Walk. They must walk without rest and must maintain a speed above 3 MPH, or else they are eliminated. Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Jordan Gonzalez, Joshua Odjick, and Roman Griffin Davis were previously cast. Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence is directing the movie.
Rebecca Ferguson joins Peaky Blinders movie: Rebecca Ferguson has joined the cast of the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie on Netflix, joining the original series’ star Cillian Murphy. The plot details are still under wraps, but Tom Harper will direct the film based on a script by the show’s creator, Steven Knight.
The Toys That Made Us renewed for Seasons 4 and 5: The backstories of more iconic toy lines will be revealed soon as the documentary series The Toys That Made Us is getting a fourth and fifth season. The previous three seasons are currently streaming on Netflix but there was no announcement of where the new seasons will stream. The toy lines featured will be revealed at the show’s panel at Comic-Con.
Scare Tactics reboot in the works: Jordan Peele is bringing back Scare Tactics with a reboot of the over-the-top prank series that will be coming to USA Network in the fall and originally airing for five seasons on SyFy network, hosted by the late Shannon Doherty and later Stephen Baldwin and finally Tracy Morgan, the show setup unsuspecting victims in elaborate pranks that included ghosts, Bigfoot, experiments gone wrong and more. It’s not clear who will host the new reboot.
Steven Caple Jr. eyed for I Am Legend 2: Warner Bros. is looking at director Steven Caple Jr. to helm I Am Legend 2, the sequel to the 2007 Will Smith movie. Caple Jr. recently directed Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and directed I Am Legend 2 co-star Michael B. Jordan in Creed II. Jordan and Smith will co-star in the sequel, the plot details of which are being kept under wraps but it will use the movie’s alternate ending, where Smith’s character survives, rather than the theatrical version as a jumping off point.
Paul Feig directing Worst Roommate Ever movie: Paul Feig is directing a movie adaptation of the Blumhouse Netflix series Worst Roommate Ever, which is in turn inspired by an article in New York Magazine. The movie will follow, “a newly single woman finds a seemingly perfect gentleman to sublet the spare room in her dream home, but she soon learns that his deceit goes beyond a phony name and application, and she has unwittingly invited a serial squatter into her home who won’t leave without a fight.” The Netflix series tells stories of people who discovered their roommates had vicious, violent, and sometimes deadly intentions.
The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires coming to HBO: Grady Hendrix’s horror/comedy novel The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires is being developed into an HBO series with Hendrix co-writing and executive producing alongside Danny McBride and Edi Patterson. The novel follows the ladies of a book club in Charleston who believe a handsome but mysterious stranger in town is a vampire who kills the local children and has to defend their suburb. Hendrix’s novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism was turned into an Amazon movie on Prime in 2022.
Lucy Lawless is returning for Spartacus: House of Ashur. Lucy Lawless will return to guest star as Lucretia in the upcoming reboot of the Spartacus series on Starz, Spartacus: House of Ashur. Set as a “What If…” alternate universe to the original series, the show stars Nick Tarabay as Ashur and, *Spoilers* instead of dying on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius in Spartacus: Vengeance, he survives and helps the Romans crush the slave rebellion led by Spartacus. As a reward, he is given control of the gladiator school, or ludus, run by Batiatus (John Hannah), and builds his stable of gladiators. Graham McTavish, Tenika Davis, Jamaica Vaughan, Ivana Baquero, Jordi Webber, Claudia Black, India Shaw-Smith, and Leigh Gill will co-star, and original series creator Steven S. DeKnight is returning to showrun the new series.
Brendan Fraser plays Dwight D. Eisenhower in a new movie: Oscar winner Brendan Fraser will play Dwight D. Eisenhower in a new movie, Pressure, which will focus on the days leading up to the D-Day invasion at Normandy. Andrew Scott is starring as Britain’s Chief Meteorological Officer James Stagg, whose job was to monitor weather conditions and determine how they would affect the invasion, reporting directly to Eisenhower.
Sharon Stone joins Nobody 2: Sharon Stone is joining Bob Odenkirk in the upcoming action sequel Nobody 2. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the movie will be released on August 15th, 2025. Derek Kolstad, Odenkirk, Aaron Rabin, and Umair Aleem are writing the script, and Kelly McCormick and David Leitch are producing the movie.
I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot finds main cast: The reboot of the 90s slasher movie I Know What You Did Last Summer has found its main cast with Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Haur-King. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing the movie, and its release date is July 18th, 2025. While the plot of the reboot hasn’t been officially revealed, it will presumably follow the same basic premise of the original, where a group of friends are involved in an accident where a bystander is killed. They cover it up, only for them to be stalked by a killer who picks them off one by one and knows what they did.
Homicide: Life on the Streets coming to Peacock: The critically acclaimed 90s crime drama Homicide: Life on the Streets will begin streaming on August 19th on Peacock. The show has been remastered in HD and 4K for the first time. Like many shows, Moonlighting being the most recent example, music rights were the main hurdle preventing the series from streaming before this, as any licensed music featured on the show would either need to be renegotiated or removed. Universal has cleared everything up, and the show will stream for the first time. The late Andre Braugher starred alongside Richard Belzer, Yaphet Kotto, and Ned Beatty and followed the detectives of the homicide unit in Baltimore. The show was created by David Simon, who would continue to explore the world of Baltimore crime in shows like The Wire and We Own This City.
In a Violent Nature 2 in development: IFC Films and Shudder are developing a sequel to their unique slasher movie, In a Violent Nature, revealed at a panel at Comic-Con. The sequel will see the return of “Johnny,” the killer from the first movie, who the movie follows for its entire duration as he wanders the woods searching for victims. The first movie’s director, Chris Nash, will return as a screenwriter for the sequel.
Invincible renewed for a fourth season: Amazon revealed during Comic-Con that Invincible has been renewed for a fourth season on Prime Video. The show’s second season ended earlier this year, and it had already received a renewal for a third season after it debuted. The third season will see Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) donning the fan-favorite blue and black costume from the middle of the comic run when Mark became more violent and dark.
Michael C. Hall is returning for Dexter prequel and a new series. Michael C. Hall is returning as Dexter Morgan for both the upcoming prequel series Dexter: Original Sin and a new sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection. Hall will narrate the prequel series, which stars Patrick Gibson as a younger Dexter, and he will star in a new series, Dexter: Resurrection, which will follow up on Dexter: New Blood. Resurrection will be set in the present day and will debut on Parmount+/Showtime in 2025.
