Musical Montage: Ludacris “Number One Spot”
Sampling “Soula Bossa Nova” by Quincy Jones, Ludacris went full Austin Powers for the lyrics and music video for his single, “Number One Spot.” Released as the second single off Ludacris’ album The Red Light District, the song reached #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and ended the year at #99 on the yearly Hot 100. With all three Austin Powers movies out by the time the song came out, Ludacris included references to all three, playing Austin, Dr. Evil, Fat Bastard, and Goldmember himself and dropping catchphrases like “Yeah, Baby!”. Verne Troyer also reprised his role as Mini-Me in the video. Quincy Jones also makes a cameo with Slick Rick, Katt Williams, and DJ Green Lantern appearing. “Number One Spot” was followed by a sequel single, “The Potion,” which was combined with “Number One Spot” as one video, which you can check out below.
