We just got back from Too Many Games 2025, where we had a panel talking about all kinds of adaptations of video games. One of the ones we discussed is not only one of the worst video game adaptations, but also one of the worst movies ever, Uwe Boll’s Alone in the Dark, which featured Nightwish’s “Wish I Had an Angel” as the end credits song. Very loosely based on the fourth game in the Alone in the Dark series, The New Nightmare, the movie stars Christian Slater as paranormal investigator Edward Carnaby, who teams up with his archaeologist girlfriend Aline Cedrac (Tara Reid) and the mysterious Bureau 713 to stop an invasion of deadly shadow creatures. The movie features an incomprehensible plot, hilariously bad dialogue, and action sequences shot so bizarrely they are almost avant-garde art pieces. Along with directing the film, Boll also directed the music video for “Wish I Had an Angel”, which is thankfully much more traditional and straightforward. Along with appearing on the Alone in the Dark soundtrack, the song appeared on the band’s fifth album, Once. It was a hit in the band’s native Finland, reaching #1 on the charts, and it was the band’s highest-ranking single in the UK. You can check out the music video below.
