Battle at the Box Office 1/20/25
In a close battle that saw One of Them Days rise to the top of the charts based on early projections, Mufasa: The Lion King returned to #1 at the box office based on the actual numbers.
Mufasa: The Lion King made another $11.7 million, bringing its domestic and worldwide revenue to just under $206 million and $588.1 million. It’s currently the seventh highest-grossing film worldwide for 2024.
One of Them Days made $11.6 million, barely missing topping the box office. The movie has an excellent A- CinemaScore and strong reviews, so word of mouth should be strong heading into the upcoming weekend and potentially beyond.
Despite opening in third, Wolf Man is most likely a massive disappointment to Universal. The movie made $10.9 million for its opening weekend, a considerable drop-off from Leigh Whannell’s last reboot of Universal Monster, 2020’s The Invisible Man, which opened at over $64 million. What makes it even crazier is that The Invisible Man opened a week or so before everything shut down because of COVID-19, so Wolf Man looks even worse in comparison. The movie got a C- CinemaScore and not particularly great reviews, so it will probably drop off quickly and find its way to Peacock in the next few months.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Den of Thieves: Pantera rounded out the top 5. Den of Thieves: Pantera had a relatively steep drop of nearly 60% from last weekend’s opening, and it’s now trailing about $2 million behind what the first Den of Thieves made in its second weekend. Sonic 3 now has $419.9 million worldwide.
Far outside the top 10, Better Man cratered from an already terrible wide opening, dropping 76% from last weekend and barely making over $255,000 in 1,290 theaters. Whoever at Paramount decided that a biopic about an artist that almost no one in the US cares about should get a massive, expensive rollout domestically should be cleaning out their desk.
Fresh off a Golden Globes win for star Fernanda Torres, I’m Still Here had the best Per Theater average with $22,741 in five theaters.
