Battle at the Box Office 2/3/25

Dog Man started February with the best opening of the year so far and the second-best animated opening ever for January.

Dog Man opened at $36 million and is just behind Kung Fu Panda 3 in terms of animated openings for January.  It’s also slightly ahead of Dreamworks’ last animated feature, The Wild Robot, which opened to just over $35 million in September last year.  Critics gave the movie pretty decent reviews, but the audience reception seems much higher, with an 86% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore, which makes it seem like the movie will have a fantastic word of mouth going into the next few weeks.  Worldwide, Dog Man has $40.4 million.

Companion opened in second place with $9.3 million.  That’s about $1 million behind the opening of star Sophie Thatcher’s last big horror release, Heretic, which made just over $10 million in November last year.  With $14.6 million worldwide, the movie is already close to doubling its budget, and it received a “B+” on CinemaScore, which is high for a horror movie and seems to bode well for its word of mouth going forward in the next few weeks.

Mufasa: The Lion King was in third place with another $6.1 million, totaling $229.5 million domestically and $653.1 million worldwide.  If it hasn’t already, it will soon top Sonic the Hedgehog 3 both domestically and worldwide, and it’s the seventh highest-grossing film worldwide of 2024.

One of Them Days and Flight Risk rounded out the top five. Flight Risk had a fairly steep drop after topping the box office last weekend, falling to fifth place with $5.4 million, a 53% drop from last weekend. One of Them Days is up to $34.4 million domestically.

Further down the list, one of the Oscar front runners, The Brutalist, moved to ninth place after a 494 theater expansion, making $1.8 million and taking it to $12.1 million domestic.

The best per-theater average went to Dog Man, which earned $9,267 in each of the 3,885 theaters it played over the weekend.
