The first major entry in the new DC Universe, Superman, took to the skies this weekend with the third biggest domestic opening of 2025.
Superman opened to $125 million, putting it behind A Minecraft Movie and Lilo & Stitch for 2025 opening weekends. Unadjusted for inflation, it’s the second-best opening Superman movie behind Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but Man of Steel would take the top spot if you adjusted for inflation. For James Gunn, it’s his second biggest opening of all time behind Guardians of the Galaxy. Worldwide, Superman has $220 million, but the international numbers are a bit soft, with less than $100 million coming from markets outside the US and Canada. The movie got an A- Cinemascore and word of mouth seems incredibly strong, so we’ll have to see how it holds in its second weekend. I Know What You Did Last Summer doesn’t seem like much competition, but the end of July puts the Man of Steel up against the Fantastic Four.
Jurassic World: Rebirth dropped 56% to second place with another $40.3 million in its second weekend. It now has $232.4 million domestically and $532.6 million worldwide. It’s currently the sixth highest-grossing film of 2025 worldwide behind How to Train Your Dragon.
F1: The Movie dropped to third place with another $13 million, taking it to $136.2 million domestically and $393.4 million worldwide.
How to Train Your Dragon and Elio rounded out the top 5. Elio has $117 million worldwide, but it would need around $300 million to consider close to breaking even. The gap between it and Elemental continues to grow, with Elemental almost $50 million higher at the same point in its run as Elio is now.
M3GAN 2.0 continues to misfire, dropping another 64% in its third weekend and almost dropping out of the top 10. It’s in ninth place with another $1.4 million and a worldwide total of $36.4 million. It’s already available as a PVOD rental on the various digital platforms.
Superman also had the best per-theater average with $30,235 in each of the 4,135 theaters it played in over the weekend.
