In the modern RTS era of hyper-polished models, micro-actions, and a fierce focus on rushing objectives, retro titles emerge to remind gamers what made the genre fun in the first place. The developers at Sarnayer have been working over the last few years to capture the glorious and quirky 90s era RTS gameplay designs that changed how players build and lead armies in games. Inspired by games like Command & Conquer and Heroes of Might and Magic III, Dying Breed is a retro-style RTS that puts players into the role of a commander, raising an army to take on a super science force of mutated and zombified enemies. Check out the release trailer to see some gameplay in action.
Dying Breed has been in development since 2018, when game creator Ignacio Trelles began revisiting his early gaming memories. It was a long journey of ups and downs to finally put together a love letter to the golden age of RTS, and now Trelles and his team at Sarnayer are working with publisher MircoProse to prepare a release build for PC on October 7th.
Dying Breed looks to be a promising and faithful retro RTS experience, featuring challenging gameplay and an over-the-top narrative told through a mix of full-motion video and blocky 3D model cutscenes. Fueling the action is a 90s-inspired electro-metal soundtrack. If you are looking to recapture the magic of old school gaming or have a curiosity to see where the foundations of the modern RTS were built from, you should definitely check out Dying Breed when it comes out next month, or check out the demo builds to get a small taste of things to come.
