Indy the Dog stars this weekend in Good Boy, but back in 1993, audiences met “EMAX” in the movie Man’s Best Friend. Lance Henriksen and Ally Sheedy star, with Henriksen playing Dr. Robert Jarret. Jarret is conducting genetic experiments on animals, including a Tibetan Mastiff codenamed EMAX. Sheedy plays Lori Tanner, an animal activist who breaks into Jarret’s lab, films what he’s been doing, and frees “Max,” taking him home. While acting like a normal, loving dog to Lori, Max has enhanced senses, strength, and speed, and can understand human conversations. He kills several animals and people in Lori’s neighborhood in rage-fueled outbursts. The movie was a modest success when it was released on November 19, 1993, grossing $12.9 million against a $6 million budget, and Ally Sheedy was nominated for a Saturn Award.
