Although it’s only been 10 years since Moana first hit theaters in animated form, a live-action remake is set to be released next summer. Catherine Laga’aia makes her film debut as Moana, who is chosen by the ocean itself to go on a quest to reunite the goddess Te Fiti with a mystical artifact to stop a blight that is destroying her island home. On her journey, she’s joined by the god Maui (played again by Dwayne Johnson), who is on his own quest for redemption: John Tui, Frankie Adams, and Rena Owen co-star in the remake. Thomas Kail, who directed the Broadway productions of Hamilton and In the Heights, is directing the remake with original screenwriter Jared Bush returning to co-write the remake’s script with Dana Ledoux Miller. Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda also return to oversee the remake’s music. Moana is out on July 10th, 2026, and you can check out the teaser below.
