As 2025 comes to a close, it’s time to give our picks for the Best and Worst Movies of 2025. Check out Zach’s picks for his Top 10 Best Movies of the Year.
- Weapons: “Barbarian was great, and Cregger cements himself with Weapons as one of the best new voices in horror, up there with the likes of Jordan Peele. If you are on its weird, creepy wavelength, this is one of the best horror movies of the year”
- Sinners: Ryan Coogler’s vampire movie is dripping in style and features fantastic performances, including an incredible dual role for Michael B. Jordan and a mesmerizing performance by Jack O’Connell as the head vampire, Remmick. Alongside all the great, gory horror action, there’s also incredible use of music, including the set piece in which musician Sammie (Miles Caton) plays so powerfully that he connects to the past and future. It has all the fun of something like From Dusk Till Dawn, but with an elevated style and a stronger social and historical focus.
- Superman: James Gunn did it again and delivered another fantastic comic book film, this time officially kicking off his new DC Universe on the big screen. After years of the grim Dark Snyderverse (which did have solid entries), it’s great to return to an optimistic Superman who brings hope instead of existential dread. David Corenswet does a fantastic job playing the Boy Scout version of Superman, and it’s full of weird and fun comic-book trappings that help establish a more expansive universe, like the Justice Gang, interdimensional creatures, and giant kaiju. Between this, Creature Commandos, and Peacemaker (specifically Season 2), this new universe is off to a great start, and hopefully things continue next year with Supergirl.
- Ballerina: From the World of John Wick: “With Ana de Armas firmly stepping into the spotlight and a steady balance of fresh ideas and familiar flair, Ballerina proves there’s still plenty of bloody, balletic life left in the world of John Wick”
- Friendship: Between The Chair Company and Friendship, it was a massive year for Tim Robinson. I think Robinson is an absolute genius, and I was cackling at pretty much every second of Friendship. Along with a pitch perfect Paul Rudd as the cool guy new neighbor and potential best friend, Robinson’s style of humor is put to full use, whether he’s sinking in a bog, losing his wife in the sewers or blowing up a client pitch meeting. If you’re a Tim Robinson fan and haven’t seen Friendship yet, skip the latest Marvel and watch this.
- Kpop Demon Hunters: In a rare case where something lives up to the hype, Kpop Demon Hunters was another fantastic animated entry from Sony Animation. Featuring the studio’s now-trademark “animate on the 2s” style, which they first brought to the Spider-Verse movies, Kpop Demon Hunters is an excellent mix of cool demon-fighting action, wacky humor, and non-stop bangers on the soundtrack (my favorite is “Takedown,” but all the songs are great). There’s also the message about not hiding your true self, and the movie overall has a ton of heart alongside everything else.
- Frankenstein: “Frankenstein feels like something Del Toro has been building towards throughout his entire career, and all the elements he has used expertly in his previous films, such as a sumptuous Gothic atmosphere, grotesque violence, and sympathetic monsters, all come together spectacularly for Frankenstein. This is one of the best adaptations of Shelley’s iconic classic and another incredible entry in Del Toro’s filmography”
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps: “The Fantastic Four: First Steps is easily one of the best MCU entries in recent memory, finally giving the Fantastic Four a movie that celebrates their legacy while introducing them to the larger MCU”
- F1 The Movie: While not quite on the level of Top Gun: Maverick, F1 is still another thrill ride from director Joseph Kosinski. Featuring Brad Pitt in maximum charm mode, the movie does for Formula 1 cars what Maverick did for jets, putting you in the driver’s seat as they hurtle around the tracks. While it may be a bit overlong, the racing sequences are all exciting and, even if you aren’t an F1 fan, you can’t help but get sucked into the drama and tension.
- Final Destination: Bloodlines: Being a massive Final Destination fan, this was one of the best entries in the series and delivered pretty much everything that fans would want. There were some darkly comedic, over-the-top death scenes with the franchise’s trademark Rube Goldberg-style setups, and even some great fake-outs to keep the audience guessing about when exactly Death would strike. It had numerous callbacks and references to previous movies in the series and adhered to established rules while adding to the overall mythology. It also had an incredibly bittersweet farewell from the legendary Tony Todd, who passed away late in 2024 but was able to film his scenes for this movie as one of his final performances.
