The backyard gang is officially back. During IGN Fan Fest, Playground Productions and Mega Cat Studios announced a brand-new installment in the classic series, Backyard Baseball, arriving July 9th for PC, Mac, and modern consoles. It marks the first time in 15 years that a new entry in the franchise is heading to consoles.
This isn’t just a remaster or retro re-release. The new Backyard Baseball brings the series fully into 3D for the first time while still incorporating 2D elements to keep that nostalgic charm intact. Fan-favorite characters are returning, including backyard legend Pablo Sanchez, as the series looks to blend its signature kid-friendly chaos with modern gameplay mechanics and expanded modes.
According to Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett, the goal is to preserve the heart of the original games while updating the experience for today’s players. Mega Cat Studios CEO James Deighan echoed that sentiment, saying the team wants to capture the same accessibility and spirit that made the original titles so beloved.
Originally launched in 1997, Backyard Baseball became a defining sports title for younger audiences, known for its colorful cast of characters and an arcade-style take on America’s pastime. This new entry is described as the most ambitious in thefranchise’ss history, promising updated mechanics and additional features that will be revealed in the coming months.
The game is currently available to wishlist on Steam, with more details on gameplay and characters expected soon.
