
The box office exploded this weekend thanks to the long-awaited debut of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which delivered a massive opening and easily claimed the biggest debut of 2026 so far.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie brought in a huge $130.9 million for the three-day weekend, with a $190.1 million five-day domestic total as it opened on Wednesday last week. Globally, the film launched to an enormous $372.6 million. It’s the biggest global opening of the year and the fifth biggest global opening ever for an animated movie. Domestically, it was the fourth-largest five-day opening ever, the fourth-largest Easter three-day weekend ever, and the 2nd-best three-day opening ever for both Illumination and Universal.
Dropping to second place was Project Hail Mary, which held well in its third weekend against Mario, dropping 41% and making another $31.7 million. It has $218.2 million domestically and a global total climbing past $400 million.
The Drama opened in third place with $14.3 million domestically. That’s the second-best opening ever for A24, behind Civil War and ahead of Hereditary. It was slightly behind the opening of Zendaya’s Challengers, which made $15 million in its 2024 opening weekend.
Hoppers and Reminders of Him rounded out the top 5. Hoppers dropped 52%, which isn’t terrible against the onslaught of Mario, and made another $5.8 million. It now has $149.6 million domestically and $332.3 million worldwide.
Further down the list, A Great Awakening drew in the religious crowds and made $2.1 million for sixth place. They Will Kill You stumbled down to seventh place after opening in third last weekend, dropping 60% and making another $2 million. It has $8.8 million for a domestic total.
