Here’s all the movie and TV news you need to know from the past week, it’s the News Shotgun.

Henry Cavill co-starring with Kevin James in spy comedy: Henry Cavill will co-star in an untitled action/comedy with Kevin Hart on Netflix. McG is directing the movie, which finds rival spies forced to spend time together in their civilian lives when their wives become friends in a Lamaze class.
Lioness gets a Season 3 release date: Taylor Sheridan’s action-thriller series will return on Paramount+ on August 2nd. Zoe Saldana stars as CIA agent Joe, who runs the “Lioness” program, which sends female operatives undercover to surgically take out certain targets; Nicole Kidman, Michael Kelly, Morgan Freeman, Laysla De Oliveira, and Genesis Rodriguez co-star.
RIP Anthony Head: Anthony Head passed away this past week at age 72 due to complications from pneumonia. Head was best known as Rupert Giles on Buffy, Buffy’s “Watcher” and recently appeared on Ted Lasso as Rupert Mannion. He was also a regular on shows like Merlin, Dominion, and Still Star Crossed, and had dozens of other movie and TV credits.
Joshua Jackson joins Your Friends & Neighbors: Wrapping up its second season this week, Your Friends & Neighbors is gearing up for its third season and has added Joshua Jackson to the cast. Michelle Monaghan was previously announced as another Season 3 addition. Jon Hamm stars as Andrew “Coop” Cooper, a divorced hedge fund manager who takes up stealing valuable items from his wealthy neighbors when he loses his job.
Jason Statham Stole My Bike gets a release date: The bluntly titled new action comedy Jason Statham Stole My Bike has gotten an August 6th, 2027, release date. Statham stars as himself and, presumably, steals someone’s bike. Vinnie Jones, Jason Isaacs, Babs Olusanmokun, Camila Mendes, Ben Foster, Jonny Lee Miller, and Rauw Alejandro co-star, and David Leitch is directing.
Devil May Cry renewed for a final season: Adi Shankar’s animated series Devil May Cry has been renewed for a final season on Netflix. Shankar said the plan was always to do three seasons, each inspired by a book from Dante’s Inferno, with Season 3 being “Paradiso”.
Hulu developing series based on Suspect: Hulu is developing a new drama series based on the 2022 novel Suspect by Scott Turow. Marissa Jo Cerar and Bruce Miller, the team behind The Handmaid’s Tale, and Matt Shakman, of Wandavision and Monarch, will produce the series, with Cerar also writing it. The book follows a PI named Pinky who investigates a case where a female police chief has been accused of extorting her male officers for sex in exchange for promotions.
The Hunting Party canceled: NBC has canceled The Hunting Party after two seasons. The show followed a task force that hunted down serial killers who escaped from a top-secret prison facility called The Pit and starred Melissa Roxburgh. Universal Television will shop the series to other outlets, and the show was a strong performer on Netflix, so it seems likely to end up there, just like Roxburgh’s previous series, Manifest. Â
Jonathan Groff co-starring with Daniel Radcliffe in Trust the Man: Merrily We Roll Along co-stars Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe will reunited for the Vietnam War thriller Trust the Man.  written and directed by Will Graham, the movie follows an ambitious Army intelligence officer who is tasked with investigating a decorated officer with a mysterious past.
Matt Rogers joins Mr. & Mrs. Smith: Matt Rogers will be a Mr. Smith in the upcoming second season of Amazon’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith.  He’ll join Francesca Scorsese, Mark Eydelshteyn, and Talia Ryder, who were previously cast. The first season’s duo of Donald Glover and Maya Erskine may also appear, and Glover is directing multiple episodes of Season 2.
Mason Thames joins Caine: How to Train Your Dragon and The Black Phone star Mason Thames has joined the cast of Caine in an undisclosed role. He’ll join star and director Donnie Yen, Rina Sawayama, and Dacre Montgomery in the John Wick spin-off movie following Yen’s Caine after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Liam Hemsworth starring in The Kellys: Our patron saint Arnold Schwarzenegger and Liam Hemsworth will be co-starring in a new action movie, The Kellys, for Amazon MGM. Directed by Brad Peyton, the movie follows disgraced NYC cop Jack Kelly, whose wife is taken hostage by terrorists in an old armory building. The movie will be a Prime Video original and debut on streaming.
RIP Peabo Bryson: R&B singer Peabo Bryson passed away this week at age 75 following a stroke. Bryson sang the “pop” versions of classic Disney songs, “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle and “Beauty and the Beast” with Celine Dion. He won Grammy Awards for both songs, and they topped the Billboard Hot 100. Outside of Disney, he had a massive hit with “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again” in 1984, which reached the Top 10.
And Justice for All series in development: Netflix is developing the 1979 Al Pacino movie And Justice for All into a series. The ’79 film was a hit, with a domestic gross of over $33 million and two Oscar nominations. It also produced the iconic Pacino line, “You’re out of order! You’re out of order! The whole trial is out of order  They are out of order!” The new series is described as ” a gritty look at an idealistic attorney’s flawed life as he struggles to fight a corrupted legal system until he finally snaps.” Jeremy Miller and Dan Cohn, who are executive producers on Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer, are writing and executive producing this new series.
War Machine sequel in development: The biggest movie on Netflix so far for 2026, War Machine, is getting a sequel. Patrick Hughes has returned to write and direct the sequel. Alan Ritchson is expected to return to star, but it has not been confirmed yet. The end of the first movie implied a larger conflict with the mysterious, deadly alien machines that targeted Ritchson and his Army Ranger training squad.
David Harbour and Gaby Hoffman starring in Little One: David Harbour and Gaby Hoffman will co-star in the upcoming dark comedy Little One.  Produced by Zack Cregger, the movie follows a family torn apart by the sudden behavioral changes in one of the children. Alex Kavutskiy makes his directorial debut with the movie.
Christian Wallace adapting George Washington’s Secret Six into a film: Christian Wallace, co-creator of Landman, is adapting the nonfiction book George Washington’s Secret Six into a film. The book details the Culper Spy Ring, a covert Revolutionary War network assembled by Washington to gather intelligence. The story of the Culper Spy Ring was previously turned into the AMC series Turn: Washington’s Spies, which ran for four seasons.
Backrooms sequel in development: Surprising no one given its breakout box office success, Kane Parsons is working on a sequel to Backrooms, but it hasn’t been officially greenlit yet. Parsons is currently looking for a writing partner for the sequel. The movie is based on Parsons’ viral online series, which was in turn based on the concept of “The Backrooms”, a dimension outside of reality that consists of endless empty rooms and bizarre entities.
Streets of Rage movie finds writers and director: Sega and Lionsgate have found the writers and director for the upcoming movie based on the iconic brawler series Streets of Rage.  Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who wrote the Sonic movies, will write Streets of Rage, and director Jeymes Samuel, who directed The Harder They Fall, will direct the movie. Derek Kolstad had written an earlier draft of the movie.
Holt McCallany starring in Hyde: Holt McCallany will hunt serial killers again in the upcoming neo-noir thriller, Hyde.  Developed by Graham and Parker Phillips, McCallany plays Detective Grimes, who is “descending into the decaying underbelly of a crumbling metropolis while hunting a brutal serial killer.” Bruce Greenwood, Nathalie Emmanuel, and David Harewood co-star.
Zack Snyder directing Escape from New York remake: Zack Snyder is tackling John Carpenter’s iconic classic Escape from New York, signing on to write and direct a “reimagining” of the film. There have been decades of attempts to remake Escape from New York, with Gerard Butler at one point attached to star in a version, and filmmakers like Radio Silence, Len Wiseman, Robert Rodriguez, and Breck Eisner all attached at various points.
