Phil Collins dreams of being an old Hollywood superstar in the music video for “I Wish It Would Rain Down.” Coming off the …But Seriously album from 1989, it was the second single following the mega hit “Another Day in Paradise”. “I Wish It Would Rain Down” reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, spent 6 weeks at #1 in Canada, and was the biggest song in Canada in 1990. It also reached #7 in the UK. Collins teamed up with Eric Clapton, who played lead guitar on the song. Collins and Clapton co-star in the music video, which is over 8 minutes long and features Jeffrey Tambor as a frustrated theater director in the 1930s. When his dancing girls are terrible and his lead actor has appendicitis, Clapton suggests that Billy (Collins) is a pretty good singer and could take the lead role. While singing the song, Billy imagines himself becoming a massive star in Hollywood, and Collins is edited into footage and photos from movies like The Maltese Falcon and White Heat, and eventually winning an Oscar.
