Musical Montage: Bryan Adams “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?”

While the masks and Spanish guitars would lead you to believe that Bryan Adams’ hit “Have You Really Loved a Woman?” was from one of the 90s Zorro movies, it’s actually the theme song for the deep-cut Johnny Depp movie, Don Juan DeMarco. Co-starring Marlon Brando and Faye Dunaway, Don Juan DeMarco follows Depp as John Arnold DeMarco, who claims to be the legendary lover Don Juan and is placed in a psychiatric facility for a 10-day evaluation, led by Brando’s Dr. Jack Mickler.  “Have You Ever Loved a Woman?” plays throughout the movie, with characters singing it in Spanish before the Adams version plays over the closing credits.  Renowned flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia provides the guitar on the track.   The song was #1 hit for Adams, staying at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks and it was nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars but lost to “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas.  The music video was shot in Spain and co-stars Cecilie Thomsen and Amira Casar and directed by Anton Corbijn, who would go on to direct movies like The American and A Most Wanted Man.  Check out the video below.
