Here’s all the movie and TV news you need to know from the past week; it’s the News Shotgun.

Zach Cregger attached to new Resident Evil movie: Barbarian director Zach Cregger is signed on to write and direct a new adaptation of Resident Evil.  A bidding war between four studios, including Netflix and Warner Bros., is underway, and Constantin Films and PlayStation Productions are producing the movie.  This reboot is said to be more horror-oriented and return to the roots of the video game series.  The last live-action film adaptation of RE was Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which tried to combine the first two Resident Evil games into one movie.

Sinestro cast for Lanterns series: The upcoming Green Lantern MAX series, Lanterns, has found its Sinestro.  Dutch actor Ulrich Thomsen will play the renegade Lantern, who will probably cross paths at some point with Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart.  The series follows Jordan and Stewart as they investigate a murder in the American Heartland.  Thomsen was previously seen in shows like Counterpart and The Blacklist.

Kaitlyn Dever joins Godzilla/Kong sequel: Rising star Kaitlyn Dever has signed on to join the upcoming sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.  Grant Sputore is directing the new entry in the Monsterverse, taking over for Adam Wingard, who directed Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla x Kong.  Godzilla x Kong was the highest-grossing movie in the Monsterverse and the highest-grossing Godzilla movie of all time.  Dever’s next big role is co-starring as Abby in the upcoming second season of HBO/Max’s The Last of Us.

Brad Pitt reteams with David Ayer for Heart of the Beast: Brad Pitt is reteaming with his Fury director David Ayer for a new action-adventure movie, Heart of the Beast.  Pitt will star and produce the film, which follows a Special Forces soldier and his loyal combat dog as they have to survive the Alaskan wilderness following a plane crash.

Robert Eggers signs on to two new projects: Robert Eggers is keeping himself busy following the success of Nosferatu, signing to direct two new projects.  One is a sequel to beloved 80s cult classic LabryinthEggers steps in for Scott Derrickson, who was originally attached to the project.  Eggers will write as well as direct.  Eggers is also returning to the horror genre with Focus Features for WerwulfThe movie will be a werewolf horror movie released on Christmas Day 2026, but little else is known now.

The Righteous Gemstones ending with the upcoming season: The Righteous Gemstones will give their last sermon in the forthcoming fourth season, announced this week as the show’s final season.  Danny McBride, Adam Devine, John Goodman, and Edi Patterson star as the Gemstones, the family behind a hugely profitable megachurch in the South.  The final season will begin sometime in March on HBO/Max.  Along with the main cast, Sean William Scott and Megan Mullally will guest star, with Mullally playing Lori Milsap, an old friend and songwriting partner to deceased Gemstones matriarch Aimee-Leigh, and Scott playing her son Corey, a long-time friend of the Gemstone siblings.

David Leitch in talks to direct Ocean’s 14: After the female-led spin-off Ocean’s 8, Warner Bros. is looking to return to the main series with the heist sequel Ocean’s 14.  The intention is bring back the original cast, led by George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, with Leitch having worked with Pitt on Bullet Train.  This would be the first of the main series not to be directed by Steven Soderbergh.

The Devil in the White City revived by Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin ScorseseThe adaptation of Erik Larson’s non-fiction book The Devil in the White City has been in development hell for years, but it may be getting revived as Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese signed on with 20th Century Films to bring the book to theaters.  DiCaprio first acquired the rights in 2010, but the attempts to adapt it have sputtered out, including a Hulu series that would star  Keanu Reeves, which never happened.  This new deal would see DiCaprio star and Scorsese direct.  The book is set in 1983 and follows the development of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, contrasted with the devious crimes of Dr. HH Holmes, who set up a hotel during the fair that was designed to trap and kill visitors, with possibly up to 200 victims.

Jon Bernthal joins The Odyssey: It didn’t seem possible, but Christopher Nolan has crammed one more star into his upcoming historical epic, The Odyssey, with Jon Bernthal joining the cast. The movie is an epic adaptation of Homer’s poem, with Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron all previously signed on to star. The movie has a July 17th, 2026, release date.

Invincible adds several new cast members: The already insanely stacked cast of Invincible is getting even more impressive in Season 3 with several new names joining.  Aaron Paul, Jonathan Banks, Simu Liu, Kate Mara, Xolo Maridueña, John DiMaggio, Tzi Ma, Doug Bradley, and Christian Convery are all voicing characters in Season 3.  The new season arrives on February 6th on Prime Video.

Dylan O’Brien co-stars with Rachel McAdams in Send Help: Dylan O’Brien has signed on to co-star with Rachel McAdams in Sam Raimi’s upcoming thriller Send Help. The movie follows two colleagues who are stranded on a deserted island following a plane crash and have to work together to survive.

High Potential renewed for Season 2: ABC has given an early renewal to the Kaitlin Olson-starring hit crime procedural High Potential.  The first season has been a massive hit across all platforms, with the first episode garnering 30 million viewers and it’s been the #1 broadcast series in the 18-49 demographic.  Based on the French series HPI, Olson stars as a cleaning woman for the LAPD who becomes a consultant for the Major Crimes division, where she uses her 160 IQ to use obscure facts and small details to solve crimes.

Ryan Gosling is in talks to join the new Star Wars movie: Director Shawn Levy has a Star Wars project in the works, and Ryan Gosling is in talks to star.  There are a few details about the new movie, but it will allegedly be a standalone film not tied to the Episode I-IX storyline.  Levy most recently directed Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide last year.  This new Star Wars movie has a release date of December 17th, 2027.

The Lincoln Lawyer renewed for a fourth season: Netflix has renewed their legal drama The Lincoln Lawyer for a fourth season.  Manuel Garcia-Rulfo stars as lawyer Mickey Haller, with the new season based on Michael Connelly’s novel The Law of Innocence.  Neve Campbell will also return to co-star, who will appear in all episodes of Season 4 after only guest starring in two episodes of Season 3.

Uma Thurman joins Dexter: Resurrection: The upcoming continuation of Dexter, Dexter: Resurrection, has gotten a significant boost, with Uma Thurman signing on to co-star with Michael C. Hall. Thurman plays Charley, the head of security for a mysterious billionaire named Leon Prater. The show is a follow-up to Dexter: New Blood, with Dexter regulars David Zayas, James Remar, and Jack Alcott returning to reprise their roles.

Lee Isaac Chung directing The Traveler: Following up on Twisters, Lee Isaac Chung has signed on for the sci-fi movie The Traveler. Based on the novel Traveler by Joseph Eckert, the book (and presumably the movie) follows a biology technician who starts to experience involuntary jumps through time.

Sydney Sweeney starring in new Masque of the Red Death: Sydney Sweeney has signed on to star in a new adaptation of the Edgar Allen Poe classic The Masque of the Red Death for A24.  The movie is described as a revisionist and darkly comedic take on the Poe story about a prince who tries to avoid a deadly plague, The Red Death, by hiding in his abbey and hosting an elaborate masquerade ball.  Charlie Polinger is signed on to direct and write the movie.
