Shout! Studios Launches New Hong Kong Cinema Classics Label Featuring Hard Boiled, The Killer, Fist of Legend and More

If your Blu-ray shelf has been missing some two-fisted action from the golden age of Hong Kong cinema, Shout! Studios is about to change that in a big way. The company just announced Hong Kong Cinema Classics, a brand-new home entertainment label dedicated to restoring and re-releasing some of the greatest Hong Kong action movies ever made — and they’re coming to both digital platforms and 4K physical media starting this summer.

Starting June 24, action junkies can dive back into John Woo’s legendary Hard Boiled and Ringo Lam’s crime classic City on Fire, both remastered in stunning 4K. And that’s just the beginning. July brings Woo’s A Better Tomorrow Trilogy and Tsui Hark’s wild Peking Opera Blues, while August cranks it up with the supernatural mayhem of the A Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy and the hard-hitting Bullet in the Head. If you ever needed a reminder why guys like Chow Yun-Fat, Tony Leung, and Leslie Cheung became icons, these new releases have you covered.

And it’s not just digital: collectors are getting some serious love too. Shout! Studios is dropping deluxe UHD and Blu-ray editions, starting with a Jet Li Collection on July 29 featuring Fist of Legend, Tai Chi Master, and more martial arts classics that helped define a generation. Each release will feature bonus features (details still under wraps), newly restored video and audio from original camera negatives, and freshly translated subtitles.

This move is a major win for fans who’ve been waiting decades for a proper resurrection of these classics outside Asia. Many of these films have been out of print or trapped in low-quality transfers — until now. Shout! Studios, teaming with the Hong Kong Film Archives, is pulling out all the stops to make sure these movies look and sound better than ever.

Given how deeply Hong Kong action cinema influenced everything from The Matrix to John Wick to Tarantino’s whole career, having these touchstones available in pristine quality feels overdue — but very welcome.
