Musical Montage: Sam Spiegel & Ape Drums “Mutant Brain”
Before she was getting us to Pump It Up in The Substance, Margaret Qualley was dancing like a maniac for director Spike Jonze in a perfume ad/music video for French fashion house Kenzo World. Released in 2016, the video features the song “Mutant Brain” from Sam Spiegel (Jonze’s brother), Ape Drums, and Jamaican DJ Assassin. In an obvious nod to Jonze’s iconic video for Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice”, the video features Qualley seemingly becoming possessed by the music and dancing through a fancy hotel. Qualley is a trained ballet dancer, much like how “Weapon of Choice” star Christopher Walken was a trained dancer. Ape Drums would later join the group Major Lazer in 2019.
