Battle at the Box Office 5/5/25
Thunderbolts* took the top spot at the weekend box office, as expected, but it was among the lower half of the MCU in terms of opening weekends.
Thunderbolts* made $74.3 million over the weekend and had a total of $162.1 million worldwide. Compared to the rest of the MCU, that domestic opening puts it between Black Widow and Ant-Man and The Wasp (both movies where members of the Thunderbolts originated). It had a lower opening than February’s MCU entry, Captain America: Brave New World, which took in $88.8 million during its opening weekend. The CinemaScore was a solid A- and it doesn’t have a lot of big blockbuster competition until arguably the end of the month when Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning opens, so we’ll have to see what kind of legs it has this coming weekend when we see the drop.
Sinners remained strong in second place, only dropping 28% from last weekend and making another $33 million. It now has $179.7 million domestically and $237.2 million worldwide.
A Minecraft Movie moved back to third after dropping to fourth last weekend. It took in another $13.7 million, with $398.2 million domestically and $874.6 million worldwide.
The Accountant 2 and Until Dawn rounded out the top five, with The Accountant 2 dropping 61% from last weekend’s opening and Until Dawn dropping 52%. The Accountant 2 is currently at $41.1 million domestically, and Until Dawn is at $14.3 million.
The Surfer and Rosario opened just inside the top 10 at ninth and tenth place, respectively. Both movies were in under 1,000 theaters, with The Surfer making $698,114 and Rosario making $513,232.
Thunderbolts had the best per-theater average, with $17,159 in each of the 4,330 theaters it played in over the weekend.
