Battle at the Box Office 5/12/25
Thunderbolts* had a solid second weekend hold and maintained its spot at the top of the box office, with most of the smaller new releases opening in the bottom half of the top 10.
Thunderbolts* made another $32.3 million, dropping 56% from last weekend’s opening. That is a similar second weekend hold to MCU movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, although those movies opened much higher. It’s a higher second weekend than Captain America: Brave New World had, but that movie also opened higher, so it seems likely to have a slightly higher domestic total when all is said and done. Thunderbolts* has $271.4 million worldwide, and it’s currently the sixth highest-grossing film for the year.
Sinners dropped another 33% to stay in second place with another $22.1 million, totaling $215.4 million domestically and $283.3 million worldwide. It actually added 155 theaters this past weekend and is getting more IMAX screens back soon as well.
A Minecraft Movie and The Accountant 2 stayed in third and fourth place, respectively. A Minecraft Movie has over $909 million worldwide, and we’ll have to see if it can cross the billion-dollar barrier. The Accountant 2 currently has $83 million worldwide.
Clown in a Cornfield performed the best of the weekend’s new releases, taking fifth place with $3.6 million. The movie only cost around $1 million, so it is already close to being profitable in the theatrical window. It’s the best opening for RLJ Entertainment/Shudder, topping last year’s theatrical run for Late Night with the Devil, which opened to $2.8 million.
Shadow Force opened in seventh place with $2.1 million, and Fight or Flight was right behind it with $2 million in eighth place. Neither film seemed to have a lot of advertising behind it, and they felt more like VOD movies that somehow got wide theatrical releases. Neither movie had particularly good Cinemascores, so expect them to drop off the list quickly against bigger blockbuster competition in the next week or two.
The weekend’s best per-theater average was $75,317 for A24’s Friendship, starring Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson. The film made $75,317 in each of its six theaters.
