Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Infinity Castle remained at the top of the box office for a second week, despite a massive drop from last week’s record-shattering opening.
Infinity Castle took in another $17.3 million over the weekend, a 75% drop from last weekend’s opening. Anime films have historically seen massive second-week drops, so it’s not surprising, but given how huge it debuted, it seemed like it may have slightly better legs. It’s still a huge success, with over $555 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing anime film of all time.
Him debuted in second place with $13.2 million. For producer Jordan Peele, that’s slightly higher than BlacKKKlansman and Monkey Man, and it’s far below the horror films he has actually directed. Worldwide, the movie is essentially a non-factor, generating only $258,000 despite its opening in several territories. There are still international markets left, but it seems like the international grosses won’t help. The movie had a modest $27 million budget, so the potential loss for Universal won’t be too significant.
The Conjuring: Last Rites dropped down to third place with another $12.2 million. It now has $150.5 million domestically and $399.3 million worldwide and is officially the highest-grossing movie in The Conjuring franchise.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale and The Long Walk rounded out the top 5, with Downton Abbey making another $6.4 million while The Long Walk made another $6.2 million.
In sixth place, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey was a disaster, opening to only $3.2 million. Worldwide, the total gross is $7.7 million. The budget is reported to be $45 million, excluding advertising and promotion, and the star power of Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie did not seem to draw in audiences. The Cinemascore was also a B-, which is not great for word of mouth, and it will probably crash out of the top 10 quickly.
The Senior debuted in seventh place with $2.6 million for Angel Studios, which is on the lower to middle end of their recent releases.
The best per-theater average went to the film Plainclothes, which made $17,628 in 1 theater.
