Based on the beloved mystery series by Donald J. Sobol, Leroy “Encyclopedia” Brown came to HBO in 1989 with a short-lived live-action series, the first episode of which you can watch in the latest Everything Action Theater. Played by Scott Bremner, Encyclopedia was a boy detective who solved cases in his hometown of Idaville. Joined by his best friend and bodyguard, Sally (Laura Bridge), he uses his vast knowledge of facts and intellect to deduce the solution to the various mysteries he encounters. The series was directed by Savage Steve Holland, who also created the “Whammy” for Press Your Luck and created or worked on shows like Eek! The Cat, V.I.P, Even Stevens, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The Series, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures , and more. The show ran for 8 episodes, from March 1989 to September 1990. Most of the episodes were released on VHS, but they’re not officially streaming anywhere. You can watch the first episode, “The Case of the Missing Time Capsule,” below via Lvlagneto IV on YouTube.
