While it was a fairly slow weekend at the box office, it was still up from the same time last year, and Hoppers held strong to stay in first place.
Hoppers, which took in $28.5 million, dropped about 34% from its opening weekend, bringing its domestic total to $86.8 million. Globally, the Pixar animated movie is doing even better, with $164.7 million at the worldwide box office after just 10 days in theaters.
Opening in second place was the latest adaptation of a Colleen Hoover novel, Reminders of Him, which debuted with $18.2 million. The movie, starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers, skewed heavily female and performed especially well in the Midwest and Southern markets. While it didn’t quite crack $20 million, it still exceeded its initial $10–$15 million tracking and improved on last fall’s Hoover adaptation, Regretting You, which opened to $13.6 million.
In third place, A24’s indie horror film undertone had a strong debut with $9.3 million. Considering the movie reportedly cost only about $500,000 to produce before marketing and acquisition costs, it’s already shaping up to be a solid win for the studio despite mixed audience reactions.
Dropping to fourth place was Scream 7, which took in $8.35 million in its third weekend. The latest Ghostface outing crossed the $100 million domestic mark, bringing its total to $106.5 million so far. Globally, it’s now the highest-grossing film in the franchise with $176 million.
Rounding out the top five was Sony Animation’s GOAT, which added $4.7 million in its fifth weekend for a domestic total of $90.5 million.
Further down the chart, The Bride! continued to struggle, plunging a steep 70% in its second weekend for just $2.1 million and a weak $11.3 million total against its reported $80 million budget. Meanwhile, GKIDS brought Kiki’s Delivery Service back to theaters for a limited re-release, which pulled in $1.66 million from just 200 locations, thanks to IMAX screenings. Nostalgia also helped Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, which returned to theaters and made $1.47 million for the weekend.
