The first true blockbuster of the year arrived this past weekend with Project Hail Mary, which delivered the biggest opening of 2026 so far.
Debuting in first place, Project Hail Mary pulled in about $80.5 million domestically, easily topping the charts and blowing past earlier projections. After just three days, the film has already grossed $80.5 million, playing in over 4,000 theaters. That’s way up from the last big Andy Weir adaptation, The Martian, which opened to $54.3 million back in 2015. Worldwide, the film has made $140.9 million. Audiences gave the movie an A Cinemascore, so word of mouth should be incredibly strong going into its second weekend.
Falling to second place was Hoppers, which continues to show strong legs and dropping 37% from last weekend. The Pixar release added another $18 million, bringing its domestic total to $120.3 million.
In third place, Indian action film Dhurandhar: The Revenge opened to over $14 million domestically. That’s the biggest domestic opening ever for a Bollywood film and a great opening for a movie that is almost four hours long.
Opening in fourth place, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come brought in about $9.1 million for its debut, landing right in line with expectations for the horror sequel but only slightly better than its predecessor, Ready or Not, which opened to $8 million in 2019. The movie got a B+ CinemaScore, which is fairly decent for a horror film.
Rounding out the top five was Reminders of Him, which added another $8 million, bringing its domestic total to $33.1 million after two weeks.
Further down the chart, Scream 7 continued its run with a total of $114.5 million, while GOAT is closing in on the $100 million mark with $97.5 million domestically. Meanwhile, A24’s undertone has made over $15 million domestically, well beyond its minuscule budget, making it an extremely profitable movie for the company.
