Michael shattered musical biopic records with a massive opening weekend, unseating The Super Mario Galaxy from the top of the charts.
Michael opened to $97.2 million domestically and $218.8 million worldwide. That blows past the previous biggest opening for a musical biopic, 2015’s Straight Outta Compton, which made $60.2 million in its opening weekend. The movie got an A- from CinemaScore, so word of mouth should be strong heading into its second weekend, although summer blockbuster season basically begins with the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2. Michael is also the biggest original (non-franchise/non-sequel) opening of 2026, topping Project Hail Mary’s $80+ million opening. For Lionsgate, it was its sixth biggest opening of all time, behind the first four Hunger Games movies and Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part II. Â
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie dropped to second place with another $20.5 million domestically, bringing its total to $385.8 million and its worldwide total to $830.8 million. It dropped 44% from last weekend.
Project Hail Mary continues to hold well in third place, dropping only another 37% and earning another $12.8 million, bringing it to just over $305 million domestically and $613 million worldwide.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy and The Drama rounded out the top 5, with the former dropping 59% from last weekend’s opening and making another $5.5 million, taking it to $23.3 million domestically and $65.3 million worldwide.
Further down the list, Over Your Dead Body opened in eighth place with $1.3 million. That’s below MacGruber and Popstar: Never Stop, Never Stopping, although both of those opened in more theaters.  Over Your Dead Body may have benefited from a more limited release, then gradually increasing the theater count, but hopefully the Quaid Army shows up when it hits VOD and streaming.  Mother Mary expanded widely and generated $1.2 million from 1,103 theaters, placing it in ninth place. Other new releases, Fuze and Desert Warrior, both of which opened in over 1,000 theaters, barely registered, and neither of them was in the top 10.
