Scary Movie took over the box office this past weekend, easily defeating Masters of the Universe, which did not have a powerful opening weekend.
Scary Movie opened with $54.3 million, the franchise’s best opening, unadjusted for inflation. If you adjust for inflation, Scary Movie 3 would have grossed over $96 million in its opening weekend in today’s dollars. This latest entry has already outgrossed the entire worldwide gross of Scary Movie V from 2013.  The movie has $104.8 million worldwide. The movie got a C+ CinemaScore, which isn’t a good sign for word of mouth going into its second weekend, although the Rotten Tomatoes audience rating is at 69%.
Masters of the Universe didn’t have the box-office power, opening in second place with $29.4 million. Amazon was definitely looking to make this a new blockbuster franchise, but it did worse than recent disasters like Tron: Ares and Joker Folie a Deux.  Masters of the Universe cost $170 million, not including advertising, so it will probably need around $340 million in worldwide box office to break even. The movie currently has $54 million worldwide. An Amazon rep issued a positive statement despite the low opening, and the company is likely betting on streaming and merchandise to offset a mediocre box-office performance. The movie got a B Cinemascore, which most likely indicates mixed word of mouth, and we’ll have to see how steep the dropoff is in its second weekend.
Backrooms dropped to third with another $25.9 million, dropping 68% from last weekend’s massive opening. That’s a pretty standard horror movie drop, but it seems like it was much more heavily front-loaded than fellow horror movie Obsession, which only dropped another 7% from last weekend, with $25.3 million.  Backrooms is currently at $212.6 million worldwide and is A24’s highest-grossing film of all time. Obsession is at $224.5 million and now ranks ninth in the worldwide top 10 for the year.
The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act rounded out the top 5 with $12.3 million for the weekend and a total of $20.2 million. The conclusion to the viral web series was a special Fathom event.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie became the first film of 2026 to surpass $1 billion worldwide, with $1,000,028,930.  Michael is in second place with over $888 million and has surpassed the worldwide gross of Bohemian Rhapsody, which made over $879 million.
