Everything Action Theater: Freeway (1996)

The same year she was dealing with a psychotic Mark Wahlberg in Fear, Reese Witherspoon was up against an equally crazy Kiefer Sutherland in 1996’s Freeway, which you can watch in the latest Everything Action Theater.

Witherspoon plays Vanessa Julia Lutz, who plans to escape her life in South Los Angeles and live with her grandmother in Stockton.  Her car breaks down on the drive and she hitches a ride with Bob Wolverton (Sutherland), a counselor for a school for boys with emotional issues.  Bob is also the infamous “I-5 Killer”, a serial killer who kills the random passengers he picks up.  Vanessa manages to fight off Bob, but that’s just the start of her problems.  The movie is a darkly comedic thriller that is a spin on Little Red Riding Hood and was produced by Oliver Stone (who had just made Natural Born Killers).  Freeway debuted at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival and later aired as an HBO original movie in June 1996.  Due to strong reviews, the movie received a limited theatrical release and has become a cult favorite.  A sequel, Freeway II: Confessions of a Trickbaby, was made in 1999 but had no connection to the first movie.  Freeway received a 4K from Vinegar Syndrome in 2022, and you can watch it below via YouTube.
