Everything Action Theater: Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987)
Fear Street is back on Netflix this Friday with Fear Street: Prom Queen, but the bar for Prom Night insanity was set high in 1987 with Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II. A “sequel” to the 1980 movie Prom Night, which starred Jamie Lee Curtis, the only connection between the two films is the name of the high school. In Prom Night II, Mary Lou Maloney (Lisa Schrage) is a selfish and vindictive popular girl crowned Prom Queen in 1957. When a prank goes wrong and her dress catches fire, Mary Lou burns alive. 30 years later, high school girl Vicki Carpenter discovers the crown and sash that Mary Lou was going to wear. She unleashes the vengeful spirit of Mary Lou, who starts killing Vicki’s friends and possesses Vicki to try and get another shot at Prom Queen. Michael Ironside, Wendy Lyon, and Louis Ferreira co-starred. Mary Lou returned in the third movie in the franchise, Prom Night III: The Last Kiss, and she’s become a cult 80s horror villain, primarily thanks to Lisa Schrage’s wonderfully unhinged performance.
