How to Train Your Dragon remained at the top of the box office for a second weekend while Elio suffered the worst opening in Pixar history.
How to Train Your Dragon took in another $36.5 million, dropping 57% from last weekend’s opening. It now has $160 million domestically and $357.7 million worldwide. It has surpassed the total domestic gross of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, but still needs another $163 million to surpass it worldwide. The original “How to Train Your Dragon” is the biggest movie in the franchise, both domestically and worldwide, with a global box office of just under $500 million.
28 Years Later opened in second place with $30 million, which is by far the biggest opening in the 28 Days franchise. 28 Days Later opened to $10 million back in 2003. 28 Years Later has already outgrossed 28 Weeks Later domestically and is only around $4 million from passing it worldwide. 28 Years Later took in $60 million worldwide and needs over $82.7 million to pass the original movie’s worldwide gross. Audiences gave the film a B score, which is pretty solid for a horror movie.
Elio debuted in third place with $20.8 million at the domestic box office. That is the worst wide opening ever for Pixar, behind Elemental and the original Toy Story. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $34.8 million, with only $14 million coming from outside the domestic marketplace, which may indicate a lack of international interest. Audiences gave the movie an A score, so we’ll have to see how much it drops this coming weekend. If it has a steep drop, this could be the biggest disaster in Pixar history. Elemental did not start strong in 2023, but it held up well and ultimately reached $154.4 million domestically and $484.8 million worldwide.
Lilo & Stitch and M: I – The Final Reckoning rounded out the top 5. Lilo & Stitch has $910.3 million worldwide, while The Final Reckoning has $540.7 million.
The best per-theater average went to a showing of Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, which made $15,161 in 1 theater over the weekend.
